The word ‘Khurjeen or Khorjeen’ means ‘’saddle bag’’ in Dari/Farsi. The reason why they chose this name is because of the pattern/style used on the saddle bags. Khurjeen rugs are woven by Turkmen and Hazara tribes in the central and Northern provinces of Afghanistan. The design and patterns of Khurjeen rugs are taken from Saddle bags having different warm colours and straight strips too. Khurjeen rugs are unique because of their pattern and delicate designs specially mixing contemporary and traditional designs together. The wool yarns used are all hand spun and dyed using only natural dyes such as cochineal and indigo, which adds to their dramatic and vibrant appearance. Once dyed and hand knotted on a cotton warp base in Afghanistan the rugs are then transported over to Pakistan where they are expertly finished including washing and trimming.
